Even though the tennis has not been starting until 5pm each day, after the sun has gone down, the desert heat can still get to the players after dark.

Somehow, a tearful Wozniacki hobbled through the next four points of this WTA Tour match after cramping to hold serve, for her second round-robin victory from her first two appearances at the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships, which put her close to qualifying for the semi-finals here in the Gulf.

When Wozniacki had the attack of cramp, she collapsed on the court, and lay there on her back with her body going into spasm for several seconds, which made her opponent Vera Zvonareva’s earlier medical problem, a nosebleed, seem fairly small-scale.

The second match of the day was much more straightforward, as Serena Williams, who is guaranteed to end the year as the world No 1, became the first player to qualify for the semi-finals when the American beat Russia’s Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-4 for her third victory from her three appearances in the Maroon Group.

As on-court temperatures have been around 30 degrees Celsius in the evenings, it has been warm enough for players to have been reaching for the plastic sacks of ice-cubes during the changeovers – Wozniacki was using them to cool down her legs, and on one occasion also had one on top of her head – and to have been invoking the ‘heat rule’, which allows for a 10-minute break before a third set.

Caroline Wozniacki defeated unseeded Virginie Razzano of France 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 at the weekend to win the WTA title at Eastbourne.

It was the second title of the year for the sixth-seeded Dane after she won in Ponte Vedra Beach, and the fifth of her career.

After upsetting top-seeded Elena Dementieva and defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska, Razzano was seeking her third career title and her first win over Wozniacki in three meetings.

Wozniacki broke to lead 4-2 when Razzano netted a smash after just one point was dropped on serve in the first five games.

But she failed to serve out the set at 5-3 as Razzano struck a forehand winner to recover the break, before claiming the tie-breaker 7-5 on her fifth set point.

In the second set, Wozniacki broke to lead 1-0, but Razzano levelled at 4-4 after three consecutive breaks from 3-2.

Wozniacki then survived a set point at 5-4 when Razzano netted a backhand, and another backhand error from Razzano gave Wozniacki a decisive break for 6-5.

In a final moment of drama, Wozniacki yelled in triumph after she thought she had struck an ace on her first match point, only for her serve to be called wide. But she closed out the match four points later when a Razzano drop shot fell short.

Meanwhile, Russian second seed Dmitry Tursunov denied Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic a first tour title on Saturday when he won the men's crown at Eastbourne 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

The 26-year-old California-based Tursunov, ranked 27 in the world, carried off his first grasscourt title with his third success in as many meetings with Dancevic to earn his sixth career title.

Tursunov, who needed treatment for an ankle knock in the closing stages, said he was seeking a good showing at Wimbledon after reaching the last 16 in 2005 and 2006.

In 2006, she was the first seed at the Australian Open (junior girls' singles), but lost the final to eighth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia. She was seeded second with Anna Tatishvili in the doubles tournament, but the pair was knocked out in the semifinals by the French-Italian pair of Alizé Cornet and Corinna Dentoni, who were seeded eighth.

On 30 November, Wozniacki was named ambassador for Danish Junior Tennis by the Culture Minister of Denmark at the time, Brian Mikkelsen.

Before the Wimbledon, Wozniacki won the exhibition tournament Liverpool International Tennis Tournament, beating Ashley Harkleroad in the finals.[7]

Later that year, she was given a wild card to main draw qualifying of the Wimbledon, where she was beaten in the first round by Miho Saeki. However, Wozniacki went on to win the girls' singles tournament, beating Slovak Magdaléna Rybáriková in the finals.

In August, she reached another WTA Tour quarterfinal, this time at the Nordea Nordic Light Open in Stockholm. She defeated top 100 players Iveta Benešová and Eleni Daniilidou before falling to eventual champion and third-seeded Jie Zheng

Wozniacki was set to face Venus Williams on 27 November in an exhibition match in Copenhagen,[11] but five days before the event, Williams canceled because of an injury.[12] The two did, however, face each other in the Memphis WTA Tier III event on 20 February. Williams beat Wozniacki, ending the nine-match winning streak Wozniacki had at the time.
